HLS Intramural Basketball

Spring 2012 Rules

I. Unless otherwise stated, all rules are consistent with NCAA Men’s Basketball rules; the commissioners reserve the right to amend these rules at any time.

II. Eligibility

A. All players on all teams must be HLS students, faculty, staff or their spouse/fiancé (HLS affiliates). There may be one non-HLS affiliate per team.

B. All players with NCAA experience at any level are ineligible for the B League.

C. Players may play for only one team in any division. All Coed teams are limited to three A league players on their roster.

D. League Fee: $5 per player/t-shirt.

III. Players & Substitutions

A. Co-ed: No more than 3 players of either gender may be on the floor at any given time.

B. A team may play with four players, if only four are present. The other team has the choice of playing four-on-four or five-on-four.

C. Substitutions may be made at any dead ball; hockey-style running substitutions are not legal.

a. A made basket does not constitute a dead ball.

IV. Clock & Game Time

A. Games will consist of two running-clock 20 minute halves, with the clock stopping on all dead balls in the last two minutes of each half.

B. A five minute overtime will be played if necessary, with the clock stopping on all dead balls in the final two minutes.

C. The clock stops on made baskets inside of one minute in the second half and overtime.

V. Timeouts

A. Each team gets two timeouts per half (which do not carry over).

B. Each team gets one additional timeout in the event of overtime.

C. Injury timeouts may be called at the referees’ discretion and will not be charged to either team. The player necessitating the injury timeout must exit the game (eligible to reenter at next dead ball)

VI. Possession

A. The game and overtime starts with a jump ball.

B. Possession alternates on ensuing tie-ups (team that lost jump gets first tie-up).

C. Whichever team would take possession on the next tie-up begins the second half with possession of the ball (and the ensuing tie up goes to the other team)

VII. Scoring

A. All games are scored by 2s and 3s.

B. Females in all leagues receive:

a. Three points for any made two-pointer

b. Four points for any made three-pointer

c. Additional foul shots (see section VII(C) below)

VIII. Hemenway-specific rules

A. There are NO backcourt violations (due to small court size)

B. There is NO 10-second limit on advancing the ball past midcourt.

C. Normal three-seconds in the paint & five-seconds not advancing the ball rules ARE in effect.

IX. Fouls

A. A League

a. All fouls will  be called by referees

b. Foul shots are awarded on all shooting fouls.

c. 1-and-1 foul shots are awarded on the 7th, 8th and 9th team fouls of each half (if those fouls are non-shooting).

d. Two shots are awarded for all fouls, starting with the 10th team foul of each half.

e. After a foul not resulting in free throws, the ball should be checked in from the midcourt sideline.

B. B and Coed League

b. Foul shouts are awarded on shooting fouls
